I’m so excited for Halloween! In my opinion, nothing is more fun than inviting friends over for a spooky night of movies. It’s always my luck that a trick-or-treater rings the door bell just as the movie is chest-deep in suspense. I jump three feet in the air!
Halloween is, frankly, the only night of the year where I even tolerate scary movies. I’m a chicken at heart, which all began in college…
My roommate Alison and I took the plunge to see the spookiest Halloween movie in 2005: The Exorcism of Emily Rose. That night I crawled into bed, drifted to sleep. A few hours into dreaming I woke up. I couldn’t move. My breathing slowed and became shallow. My eyes darted around the room for any sign of movement. I took a deep breath and reached for my cell phone to check the time. It was just after 3:00 a.m. Oh no.. no..no..no.
In the movie (SPOILER ALERT) the main character became possessed in her college dorm room during the “devil’s hour”: 3:00-4:00 a.m.
Alison was sleeping peacefully across the room on the top of her bunk bed (her desk was below). I moved slowly and climbed down the latter of my bed. Not sure of what to do, I climbed Alison’s latter to gently wake her up. I arrived at the foot of her bed and started whispering “Alison”…. “Alison”… she woke up, looked at me and started screaming!
To this day, this is a classic story that’s told each year. Alison couldn’t see my face, just an outline of my body and I was the crazy fool scaring the bejeezus out of her.
After that night I slept with the lights on for a month, which is why I save one night a year for a good scare and leave it to my husband to comfort me. If you’re planning to get your scare on with a festive Halloween party, here are my go-to bacon treats to make. No tricks here!
